The result is not an automated map export. It is an original cartographic artwork, built from geographic data through a deliberate design process, and reproduced as a giclée fine-art print.

The cartographic artwork itself is created without generative AI.

More about this work

The landscape shown in this artwork

Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula and the Winelands anchor the south-western corner of the composition, where the Atlantic and False Bay meet. The Swartland and West Coast extend north to Lamberts Bay, while successive mountain belts give way to inland regions of the Boland and Breede River Valley, eventually opening into the semi-arid Karoo interior.

Across the southern half of the artwork, the terrain turns through the Cape's folded mountain systems toward the Whale Coast, South Coast and Garden Route as far east as Nature's Valley. Towns, roads and river systems can be read in relation to those landforms, showing how passes and valleys connect the province's coastal settlements, agricultural districts and interior landscapes.

How this map is made

A composed cartographic artwork: terrain, contours, hydrology, settlement and typography brought into a single visual hierarchy. The detail rewards close looking; the composition rewards the daily glance.

Each 34 Degrees Design map begins with sourced geographic and elevation data. The terrain is built from GIS and NASA SRTM elevation data, processed in ArcGIS Pro and then developed by hand into its final expression. Contours, height ranges, hillshade and colour are not left as default GIS output. They are chosen and adjusted by eye so that the landscape reads as it does in life, from snow and pale high ground through brown rocky slopes to greener low-lying country and the transitions along the coast.

Further layers are then added individually from authoritative sources, including OpenStreetMap shapefiles and other GIS datasets: roads, highways, railways, settlements, water, boundaries, route markings and infrastructure. Each layer is balanced manually against terrain, hillshade and contours, so that no single layer overwhelms the composition, human infrastructure stays legible without flattening the landscape, and the terrain remains visible even across dense urban areas.

Typography, place names and route labels are researched and positioned by hand, placed for readability without obscuring the geographic and human patterns beneath them. Every work is resolved to read clearly both at close range and from across a room.

The original master artworks are produced at Flagship scale, approximately two metres across, and the A1 Editions are derived from those large-format originals. Each master takes weeks, and sometimes close to a month, to resolve, because placement, hierarchy, colour, terrain, line weight and annotation are curated by eye and by hand. The work is authored by the founder, an urban planner and cartographer.

Printing & materials

Offered in two editions. Precision Edition is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte (190 gsm): a bright-white, ultra-smooth matte paper selected for exceptional detail, a refined glare-free finish, and clear reproduction of terrain shading, contour lines and typography. Gallery Edition is printed on Standard Canvas (360 gsm): a durable canvas selected for large-scale statement pieces, with a subtle surface texture and richer physical presence at flagship size. Standard Canvas works include approximately 8 cm of additional canvas allowance on all sides, making them suitable for local stretching after delivery. Artwork is reproduced faithfully at full resolution; never redrawn, regenerated or simplified.

Shipping & delivery

Works are wrapped and rolled in protective tubes for courier dispatch. Domestic shipping and handling within South Africa is included in the listed price. A1 Editions are shipped rolled in protective tubes; Flagship Works are shipped rolled and unframed in longer protective tubes due to their large format, with size-appropriate courier handling included in the listed South African price. Please unpack with care: genuine print-production faults and courier damage are covered, but damage caused by rough unpacking or handling after delivery is not. International shipping is available on request and quoted at cost before payment. Full details on production faults, courier damage and unpacking are set out in our Returns & Refunds policy.

From the Cartographic Art Statement
My cartographic artworks celebrate places, not just coordinates. Special places are memory, longing, and sometimes more: an identity, or a home.
