The landscape shown in this artwork
This artwork reads the south-western Cape as a connected landscape rather than a collection of separate destinations. Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula occupy the meeting point of the Atlantic Seaboard and False Bay, while the urban edge continues east through Somerset West, Strand and Gordon's Bay. To the north and east, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington sit within the Winelands and the mountain-defined valleys of the Boland.
The artwork extends north to Langebaan along the West Coast and east across the Drakenstein Mountains through Du Toitskloof. Beyond the mountains, the Breede River Valley opens towards Worcester, Ceres and Robertson, while the mapped extent continues south-east into the Overberg through Hermanus, Caledon, Swellendam and Bredasdorp. Coastline, relief, settlement and road networks are shown together, making visible the geographic relationships that connect the Peninsula, Winelands, Boland and Overberg.
