The landscape shown in this artwork
The map moves from the KwaZulu-Natal coast at Durban, north to uMhlanga, Ballito and KwaDukuza (Stanger) and south to Scottburgh. Inland, it proceeds through Pinetown and Pietermaritzburg to Howick. Midlands towns including Mooi River, Estcourt, Greytown, eXobho (Ixopo) and Richmond are featured.
To the west, the mapped landscape reaches the foothills and well-known mountain destinations around Underberg, Bergville, Cathedral Peak, Cathkin Peak, Champagne Castle and Giant's Castle. Here, the Drakensberg (uKhahlamba) forms the dominant topographic edge with Lesotho; to the east, the Indian Ocean defines the narrow coastal plain and the north-south chain of coastal settlements.
